Freshman girl's at Sugar Bowl

The results from last Friday were great! Truckee High's team placed first, followed by Sugar Bowl Academy  and North Tahoe. The Boys team came in third place, with Sugar Bowl Academy in second and North Tahoe in first. It was a great race to start out the season.
Waiting to teach a lesson

The following day, Saturday, our team volunteered to teach ski lessons for the REI winter trails day at Tahoe Donner Cross Country. There, they got skis, poles and boots to demo for free, as well as a place to ski for free. On top of that, they got free ski lessons from us.
Short lesson to help teach ski lessons better

They were then encouraged to give a $5 donation to the team, which goes towards paying for a ski trip in Utah. They went from not being able to put on their skis, poles and barely even able to keep on their feet to actually skiing back and forth around the meadow quite easily! It was a big success!

Many of my teammates also raced on Sunday for a Junior National Qualifying race. Although it was not a required race, many showed up to race, including me. Each individual did well. Results are posted.

Tomorrow, Friday the 18, we will have another race. This time it is at Aburn Ski Club and will be a 5km classic race. Hopefully we will have phenomenal results again! Results will be posted after the race has happened.

And on Monday, Martin Luther King Day, we are holding the annual Sierra Skogsloppet at Tahoe Donner Cross Country. It is a 15, 7.5 or 3km freestyle race with great prizes at the end. We are putting the race as a fundraiser for Truckee School's Nordic teams. We'll be there to cheer on the racers. Or, of course, race!

Race at Sugar Bowl

With hard training and tough athletes, our coach, John Halvorsen, believes that the team will do very well against the other teams this season. We all hope so, and we will be put to the test on Friday, as it's the first High School race of the season! Results will be posted at this link. They will be towards the bottom of the page labeled Sugar Bowl Freestyle.

As a team, Truckee High has been and will continue to train hard through the week and the rest of the weeks to come. Monday consisted of a long, easy ski, and Tuesday was intervals of varying lengths. Today, will be technical drills that will help us have better form. Thursday will be an easy ski with some short speeds to recover and work on speed. We will also wax. Then it is race day!

Skiing!

Listening to the drills we will do.
We have been able to ski this whole week! Also, the snow is surprislingly good up at Aburn Ski Club. On Monday we did a time trial to see who gets on Varsity and who skis with JV. Tuesday, we worked on our technique going down hills, along with V-2 and V-2 alternating. Today, we will ski for about 45 minutes to get our endurance up, while thinking about the drills we have worked on to improve our skiing. Then, we will practice relay transitions, as our race this Friday (Decmeber 13, 2012) is a relay. Thursday, we will wax our skiis so they are fast to ski on at Kirkwood the next day.
Example of how to do the drills.

We all know we haven't been able to train as                                                                                            much as we usually have because it is so early in the season, but we also know that no one else has been able to either. We have made the time that we have skied valuable, and will use that to our benefit. We will go into the race knowing we did what we could to train and we will give it our all. I think we are all excited and a little nervous for our first race of the season, but we will go for it and have a good time.

Scott Hudson Kirkwood Relays Freestyle

Our first race is coming up- in exactly one week! It will be the first race of the season, as well as the only relay during the season. I am looking forward to it. Each team and each person competes for points. At the end of the season, there is a school winner and individual winners. The Kirkwood race counts for team points, however it does not count for individual points. Future races count for both team and individual points. For more information about Truckee High's Nordic schedule, photos, and results, go to: http://www.truckeenordic.org/ths/index.html

The Kirkwood Ski Resort is about an hour and 45 minute drive away from Truckee. Luckily, it looks like they have enough ski to race. To see a live web cam of a downhill resort there, look at this link: http://summer.kirkwood.com/site/mountain/webcam

Youth Nordic Races

2012/13
Youth Nordic
Race Schedule
Racing can be fun and we encourage all young Nordic skiers to get out and give it a try. You never know, some day one of these skiers might be standing on an Olympic or World Cup Podium. Below are the junior races scheduled for this season.

The 5km Alpenglow Freestyle Race and the Great Ski Race are better for more advanced skiers. The ideal distance for youth racers is 1-3 km to help them learn to ski fast and develop fast twitch muscles.

We have not finalized the date of the Tahoe Cross Country Ski Education Association's Kid's Great Ski Race. Will let you know has soon as we have it set.

Looking Ahead for State Championships

Truckee High Nordic Team 2010.

Truckee is looking forward to racing this year, especially at State Championships. It is on March 23, 2013 at Auburn Ski Club. Auburn Ski Club is about a fifteen minute drive from the high school. We train there often, so we know the trails and the course. We have two races that day- one classic and one skate. The classic race is 3.2 km, followed by a 4 km skate two hours later. As tough as it will be, we will be enjoying our selves.

In the past, we have done very well. Last year, for open division girls, Annika Winans placed fourth, followed by Zoe Johnson. As for varsity girls, Gabrielle Rinne placed firth, with Skyler Flora right behind her. The boys swept the podeum in the open division. Eli Yale, Brandon Flora, Aaron Deeter, and John Guerra were the top finishers, all from Truckee High. Jordan Mcelroy won in the Varsity division, with his team Alex Kopytko (seventh) and Branden Deeter (eight), and  Jake Kamenetsky (14). We will work hard this year to keep up our fantastic placing we have had in the past.
